Making Textbooks Free - Flatworld 2.0 Launch
Textbooks are expensive. Really expensive. Well one of our clients at Zivtech is working to turn that on it's head. This week we launched Flatworld Knowldege 2 with a whole new look and set of features. It was a lot of work but we're pretty proud of the result.
Mashable has an interesting writeup about Flatworld and some other projects meant to reduce the cost of school for students.
The way that Flatworld works is that they negotiate with professors like a regular book publisher, except they offer the finished product for free on their site. They make their money selling printed versions and other related products such as audio versions, printable chapters, study guides and quizzes. Professors can also remake their book on the site, adding or removing chapters, so the students only get the material they are using for the class. Students can pick up versions of the book in their bookstore. Everyone wins except the traditional publishing industry.
Here's another write-up from Jody on the release: http://www.zivtech.com/blog/flat-world-knowledge-20-release
